Sophiya Uprety - Nepal

Course: Bachelor in Food Science and Nutrition and Master in Public Health
Institute: Deakin University
Location: Melbourne, Victoria

I obtained both Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Deakin University funded by Australian government scholarships. The Bachelor’s degree was on Food Science and Nutrition and the Masters degree was on Public Health.

After completing each degree, I came back to my country and had the opportunity to work for the United Nations (UN) agencies in the area of public health nutrition which is very much related to what I studied. Improving nutrition is a big challenge faced by Nepal and there are very few qualified nutritionists available in the country to work in this area.

The high quality and technically sound degrees obtained from Deakin University has enabled me to get employed by key UN organisations that work in the field of nutrition in Nepal including UNICEF, UNHCR and UNWFP.

During the course of my eight years of progressive work experience, I have managed to establish myself as a recognised nutritionist at a national level. Similarly, I have also had the opportunity to contribute towards improving the nutritional status of vulnerable women and children of Nepal through active engagements at policy level, by providing technical support to deliver much needed nutrition programs as well as through advocacy and coordination with various partners including related government ministry, donors and I/NGOs.
