Pamela Jose - India

Course: Graduate Diploma in Environmental Planning (Grad Dip. Env. Planning), Master of Business (MBus)
Institution: University of Tasmania
URL: www.international.utas.edu.au/
Location: Hobart, Tasmania

Prior to coming to Australia, I had completed my Bachelors of Engineering in Industrial Biotechnology from Anna University. Since traveling to Tasmania in 2008 for higher studies, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Australia. Even though there are four distinct seasons here in Tasmania, you never know when the rain would come even if it seems scorching hot in December!!

UTAS has one of the most diverse student bodies with students from more than 25 countries. Studying at UTAS was a completely new experience with differences in every facet of education and socializing from creative methods of evaluation to the University Union cultural nights. My lecturers at both the Faculty of Business and School of Geography and Environmental Studies were highly qualified and had numerous experiences to relate our studies to. Rather than just studying only from text books, my lecturers would have relevant corporate/ environmental case study discussions in the class among classmates and with representatives from relevant industry bodies.

Being a regional area with limited population, there is more greenery and natural beauty around that creates the perfect environment to concentrate on studies. In saying that, weekend nights also offer ample opportunities to unwind with amazing cuisines and friends along the Salamanca Place and the Wharf. As a student, shared accommodation was widely available at modest rates, in comparison to other Australian metro cities. With the campuses of UTAS Hobart spread throughout the city, regular public transport services made it really accessible.

Being from an Indian city that is thickly populated, there was a culture shock as malls and shops normally closed at 6pm. Not to mention the Hobart International Airport, you have got to see it to believe it. It did take time to settle, but once that was done, will be an enjoyable place and you will feel its worth as an education destination.

While in Australia, I have had the opportunity to work in a plethora of industries like retail, FMCG, and environment/ business consulting. Even after graduation, the University of Tasmania offered their services to find better jobs and even had the opportunity to work as a Tutor with the Faculty of Business, sharing experiences from workplace.

Taking the quality decision to come to Australia for my graduate studies is by far one of the best decisions in my life. Australia has a thriving economy and the quality of education.
