Nixie Lam - Hong Kong

Course: Master of Business
University of Queensland
Brisbane, Queensland

The University of Queensland (UQ) language studies gave me the skills I needed to land a managerial role at the Hong Kong office of American Express.

I currently take care of client acquisition for American Express' Premium Segment, a position which requires me to liaise with a select group of people from around the world.

People often ask me why I chose to study a foreign language rather than something ‘more useful’? I answer them – a language course is an opportunity to learn a foreign language and also to have a better understanding of a different culture.

I always thought that I would become an interpreter but here I am with a job that needs a close understanding of people, and my degree definitely helped me to achieve that.

As an active UQ Alumni, I am currently an immediate Past President of the University of Queensland Alumni Association of Hong Kong, one of the best things about studying at UQ was the student freedom.

The atmosphere is more about self-governance/management. You are responsible for your actions and managing your time. I think this is very important for educating the student from within.
