Location: Melbourne, Victoria

Australian Leadership Awards enabled me to pursue my higher studies in women's studies. Before receiving scholarship, I was teaching in private colleges as a part time lecturer struggling to forge a career in academia with strong interest in Research. Higher studies in Australia made me determined to pursue career on what I enjoyed most: teaching, research and writing.

In Nepali context, taking these three areas together are often challenging due to lack of institutional mechanisms in University and limited number of Research Grants and Fellowship.

After coming back, contrary to many people's expectations of choosing to work in NGO/INGOs, I decided to start teaching in University again. Two years after arrival from Australia was hardest for me. Becoming a mother again with second child and working in academia with lowest pay and recognition was most testing time of my career. Fortunately, soon after I passed competitive Tribhuvan University Service Commission Examination and became a full time Lecturer in Tribhuvan University.

These past 5 years that I have been back from Australia has been like a roller coaster ride. From an unknown face in Academia, I have become representative of new generation women academics in Nepal. I say this because relatively few women returning from higher education abroad choose to remain in Academia because of the low pay and rigid entry requirements. I have continued to write and speak about the need of more academic women entering the public university and transforming the masculinised nature of academia in Nepal. I am passionate about gender issues in Nepal and continue to bring them into forefront through teaching, research, op-ed articles and newspaper and television interviews.

For academic year of 2014, I was entrusted to update two courses on "Gender and Feminist Studies" and to develop entirely new course on " Ageing and Disability Studies" for newly introduced Masters in Sociology in semester system being implemented by Tribhuvan University.
