Lila Ram - Pakistan

Lila Ram was born and raised in remote rural area of Sindh province and started his professional career in Karachi. He was awarded ADS (Australian Development Scholarship) award for Masters of Education (Research Methodology) degree at the University of Sydney in 2006. He earned Master Degree with Distinctions and High Distinctions in different subjects and returned to Pakistan in 2007. After returning home Lila Ram joined his previous employer, the Teachers Resource Center and worked with them. As the Manager Research and Advocacy he contributed to the capacity building of NGO professionals, Government functionaries and of teacher trainers on Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Child Centred Pedagogy in primary education in low-income Public Sector Schools.  He believes that the Australian education has helped him think “out of the box” and enhanced his analytical and critical thinking skills.

In 2008, he joined United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as an Education Officer and is contributing to the promotion of girls’ Primary Education (+ ECE) in different districts facing low socio-economic and education indicators. UNICEF education interventions aim to increase enrolment and retention of girls with improved learning outcomes in a conducive environment free from corporal punishment at Public Sector Schools.  Lila Ram directly coordinates with The Education Department, Government of Sindh for implementation of various initiatives thereby directly supporting MDG 2 (Achieve universal primary education) and MDG 3 (Promote gender equality and empower women). Currently, he is also contributing to the development of Sindh Education Sector Plan being developed by Education Department, Government of Sindh under Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

His Australian experience further increased his understanding and respect for different cultures and diversity. Tolerance and respect for diversity in Australia was worth experiencing as he strongly believes in respecting diversities and different perspectives. His education in Australia also provided him the opportunity of establishing professional network and friendship with colleagues from different countries. The interactions with colleagues, even after leaving Australia, have proved useful for professional and academic knowledge and research work.

Recognizing his work during studies and post education, Lila has been awarded ‘Australian Alumni Excellence Award 2013Pakistan’ under the category of ‘Austrade – Australian Alumni Award for Education’ by Australian Trade Commission. Education and Social Work Faculty, University of Sydney had nominated him for this award. Lila has served voluntarily on Steering Committee of Australian Scholarships Alumni-Pakistan for a year in 2010.
