Clement Chen - Singapore

Course: Bachelor of Laws (Hons)
Institute: University of Queensland
URL: www.uq.edu.au
Location: Brisbane, Queensland

Clement graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Queensland in 2011.  He had previously completed his pre-tertiary education in Saint Joseph’s Institution and Catholic Junior College.

As a Deputy Public Prosecutor in the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), an agency under the Singapore Government, Clement represents the general public interest by initiating and pursing court cases against suspected criminals.

He is involved deciding whether to institute, conduct or discontinue criminal proceedings against an individual for any offence.  Part of his job scope also entails evaluating the sufficiency of evidence, directing further investigations if necessary, and deciding whether an offender an offender should be charged and with what offence.

Clement also participates in career open days in local and international schools in Singapore, under initiatives organised by the University of Queensland and AGC.  The purpose of these career open days is to raise awareness of the opportunities one could expect with a law degree and the role of Public Prosecutors in a legal system.

Indeed, opportunities for law graduates extend beyond becoming lawyers, with persistently strong demand for law graduates as in-house counsels in large corporations and government agencies and educators for law-related subjects.

Clement acknowledged the firm foundations his university degree has contributed to his current role in the legal industry:

“Law degrees from a select few Australian institutions are recognised for admission to the Singapore Bar.  The law program in the University of Queensland is an intellectually stimulating and demanding course which gave me a strong grounding in legal principles and instilled in me the ability to analyse and reason through complex situations. These skills put me in great stead when I returned to Singapore to practice law.  The lecturers and tutors in the University of Queensland are experts in their respective fields and are genuinely passionate about teaching and imparting knowledge to students.

Although a lot of time was spent on studying, I managed to travel around the different states during the semester breaks and made great friends whom I still keep in contact with till today.”
