Caroline York - USA

Course: Study Abroad (Linguistics)
University of Sunshine Coast
Sunshine Coast, Queensland

I have great memories from my studies and travels in Australia: hand feeding kangaroos, pictures by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, swimming with sharks at Underwater World, learning to surf, going to an NRL game, and enjoying the Australian sun.

I learned more about who I am and what I am capable of, than I imagined possible. Traveling gave me the confidence to navigate new places. Standing on the edge of a bungy platform taught me how I handle my fears. Learning to surf helped me prove I could do something new. 4WD-ing across Fraser Island gave me a sense of the world being bigger than myself and being at a NRL game showed me the heart of Aussie sport.

These experiences and the personal growth from my time in Australia will open new doors for me at my current university and will make me a more competitive applicant in the future. Understanding who you are and what you are capable of increases your ability to present yourself well. Future interviewers, employers, and graduate schools will appreciate your ability to work well in a diverse environment and see that you are capable of transferring your skill set to new situations.
