Amam Zonaed Siddiki - Bangladesh

Course: Postdoctoral Fellowship
Institute: University of Melbourne
URL: www.unimelb.edu.au
Location: Melbourne, Victoria

I was a recipient of Endeavour Research Fellowship in 2010 and worked in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Melbourne with Prof. Robin Gasser who is a reputed parasitologist in Australia as well as throughout the world.

Since my return from University of Melbourne I was involved with academic research and teaching and looking after the Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab under the University as a Lab-in-charge. This additional post in my home University was a challenging task and I was successful to transfer my Australian laboratory experiences to develop this Diagnostic lab into a world class facility.

Establishing a modern disease diagnostic lab is quite important for developing countries like Bangladesh and with limited resources it is more difficult to make it a functional one. Since last two years I have spent a significant time of my job in procurement and installation of different state-of-the-art lab equipment and my colleagues in Melbourne University were always very helpful in guiding me at different steps. I feel very happy when I see the lab fully suitable for diagnostic service to poultry and dairy farmers in and around Chittagong city.

The other significant issue is that students from my University, CVASU is using this lab in full strength and at present there are more than 20 postgraduate students conducting research on various pathogens in this lab.

In addition I was able to establish links with several international institutions/organisations like the University of Melbourne, the University of Liverpool (UK), Assam Agricultural University (India), the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), the Royal Veterinary College London (UK), the University of Cologne (Germany) and the University of Ghent (Belgium). All these new partnership were based on my experiences gained on molecular biological research at the Melbourne University.

This year (2014), I have received the Austrade Australian Alumni Excellence Award as an Endeavour awardee and I am now involved in promoting Australian education to my students, colleagues and peers.
