Abhinav Sharma - India

Course: Bachelor of Business Information Systems
Institution: Monash University
Location: Melbourne, Victoria

I came to Australia at the age of 17 with eyes full of dreams, a bag full of belongings and primarily with an aim to grow personally and professionally.

In the first two years of my stay in Melbourne (Australia), I pursued a diploma in Hospitality Management. It did not take me much time to discover that Australia has a strong hospitality culture. The rich hospitality culture allowed me to meet with a range of passionate people in the industry and I was surprised to find out how seriously Australians take their food.

Realising the strong hospitality culture, it was reasonably easy for me to find myself a part time job at a five-star hotel. The job paid my bills and allowed me to be independent at a very young age. Alongside earning some money, I picked up some great skills i.e. a vast knowledge of different kind of foods and wines, excellent people skills, and ability to understand culture.

I decided to study further and pursue a technical degree. Knowing that Australia provides great education flexibility, I started off with an advanced diploma in Computer Science at TAFE. I completed my diploma with a distinction. The sound academic results in my TAFE diploma helped me to position myself for one of the best universities in the country for an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Business Information Systems).

After completing my degree, I was hired by a multinational consulting company to work as a consultant.

Looking back at the journey I had, Australia has added significant value to my life. I had an opportunity to meet some great people, fulfilled my dreams to have an international degree from a renowned university, work in a globally renowned firm and have experienced some great moments which moulded me into the person I am today.

I am glad to say that my decision of coming to Australia 8 years ago was a life changing moment of my life.
