The Australian Government has provided greater support to onshore international students who work in the tourism and hospitality sectors by relaxing fortnightly work limits during study periods.

Under the changes announced recently, a 40 hour fortnightly limit previously applied during study periods has been lifted.

Temporary visa holders can also apply for a special 408 COVID-19 Pandemic Event Visa for a period of 12 months if they work in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Temporary visa holders will be able to do this up to 90 days before their visa expires.

These measures come as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic following feedback from Australia’s states and territories about the need to support these sectors in recovering from the pandemic.
