State and Territory welfare support

We stand united to support international students in our care as we are all #InThisTogether.

States and territories are working closely with the Australian Government, educational institutions and community organisations to look after the health, safety and wellbeing of international students.

For specific state and territory information, see below:

Northern Territory:

  • Worker and Wellbeing fund of $5m plus $240 000 for StudyNT International Student Wellbeing Grants including support for emergency food
  • Darwin Student Space mental health support
  • Small Business Survival Fund to support keeping people in work who are not eligible for JobKeeper payment

Western Australia

  • StudyPerth Crisis Relief to address the acute needs of international students (rent and food support)
  • State Emergency Welfare Program : emergency accommodation, food, clothing, personal support services and financial assistance
  • Lotterywest COVID-19 Relief Fund: assistance with food, clothing, accommodation and other critical needs via community organisation


  • Queensland International Student Crisis Assistance Package of $10m
  • $5m for groceries, partnerships with GIVIT and Multicultural Australia & the Queensland Student Hub - free online student support
  • Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal
  • Study Brisbane Frozen Food Program - 20,000 frozen meals per week distributed by 45+ institutions in Brisbane and the Gold Coast

New South Wales

  • Short-term emergency accommodation as part of a $20m package for international students
  • 24/7 advice and information through NSW Government COVID-19 hotline (13 77 88)
  • International Student Legal Service NSW and 50,000 downloads of My Legal Mate app
  • Mental wellness support through $73 million package including 24/7 NSW Mental Health Hotline (1800 011 511)

Australian Capital Territory

· Jobs for Canberrans Fund of $20m for residents including international students

  • $450,000 support package for temporary visa holders


  • International Student Emergency Relief Fund of $45m for international students facing hardship
  • One-off relief grants for people in rental hardship
  • Dedicated COVID-19 support hub on the Study Melbourne website, access to free accommodation and employment legal advice
  • City of Melbourne's 'Our Shout' food vouchers


  • Financial support of $3m for temporary visa holders, including Pandemic Isolation Assistance Grants and emergency relief and assistance through partner non-government organisations
  • Rent Relief Fund of up to $2000 or four weeks' rent for international students suffering from extreme hardship

South Australia

  • International Student Support Package of $13.8million
