Plan your psychology degree in Australia
There are lots of options available at university if you want to study in this field. Aside from psychology, courses may lead you to careers in human resources, community welfare and teaching. You may find yourself working work with troubled individuals, with adults, children and families, and within large organisations to provide counselling, testing, advice and consultation.
Becoming a registered psychologist in Australia requires four years of approved full-time study (usually including an honours year), followed by supervised practical experience and/or a masters qualification. Check that your degree is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society. equirements for registration may differ in other countries, so contact your local registration authority for further information.
You can also look at the vocational education and training (VET) sector. VET courses usually run between one and two years and often have fewer entry requirements.
Postgraduate qualifications for a professional career
Over half of the psychology graduates in Australia go on to further study—coursework and research programs are equally popular.
Most postgraduate qualifications that have ‘psychology’ in their title provide students with new specialisations and upgraded skills. Some students in masters and doctoral programs are completing further study to become qualified psychologists or to gain registration in a speciality area.
If you are contemplating postgraduate studies for professional advancement, make sure that your area of specialisation and your qualification will be recognised in the country you wish to practise in.
