We are all taught mathematics at primary school and secondary school, and many people cannot wait for these lessons to finish. But if you are now considering continuing your maths studies at universities, you probably loved your classes and are very talented.
But did you know how many sub-divisions of maths there are? There is pure maths (subjects like differential and integral calculus, mathematical logic, linear programming as well as areas like environmental or financial maths); applied maths (vector calculus, dynamics, probability); and statistics and operations research (sampling theory, non-parametric statistical inference, stochastic processes).
Australia + you = success!
What does Australia have to offer you? In Australian universities, maths courses are easier to find than you might expect, considering it is such a small, specialised field. Nearly 70 campuses offer courses with a maths major available.
Even more surprisingly, they are in high demand. Entry requirements vary but, overall, it is a very competitive field.
Multiply your career paths
Most of postgraduate students in maths do research, although there are coursework programs available. Alternatively, if you want to work, you will have lots of options for the future. Some graduates go in to occupations requiring specialised mathematical skills (computer professionals, actuaries, statisticians and researchers), while others take on broader positions in both the public and private sectors. And of course schools are always in need of good maths teachers.
Maths is the same all over the world, so you can use your skills in Australia, back home, or anywhere else you decide to work.
