Are you interested in the big picture? The timeless questions? If you answered ‘yes’, it will be hard to look past the humanities and social sciences.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is the flagship qualification in Australian universities, and is available all around the country. The freedom this general program provides you means you can explore whatever fascinates you—Egyptian artefacts, middle English poetry, or theories about culture and aesthetics. Maybe you would like to try one of the courses Australian institutions specialise in, such as Asian and international studies. Or learn how to deal with ‘real world’ problems with courses in politics or social science.
Explore your passions
If you do opt for a general undergraduate degree like the BA, be prepared to think, research and write to improve your mind, not just your practical skills and career prospects.
Double degrees are very popular with humanities students. You might add a degree in law, education, engineering, business, or add a specialisation in a vocational field like policy and government to expand your career options.
If you want to do something for humanity, rather than just study it, look no further. Among the thousand or so undergraduate options are courses in social and community welfare (including disability and youth studies) and aged care.
If you are a graduate student with an arts background, you could do research in one of the field’s countless specialisations. Alternatively, you could follow many humanities graduates into a postgraduate certificate or diploma, or masters degree by coursework.
There are also plenty of certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas on offer at vocational education and training (VET) institutions.
Hundreds of courses across Australia
Courses in the humanities and social sciences are some of the most well taught and well received of all the disciplines, according to the students who take them. The only advice you will need is this: shop around. Humanities and social science courses are available at nearly every campus in Australia. Even those with the same name will be different from one campus to another, so research your options carefully.
