Health services and support

Australia offers you a wide range of courses that will put you on the path to a health services career. Choose the course that is right for you from seven main study areas:

  • complementary medicine;
  • allied health professions;
  • paramedical services;
  • dental support services;
  • public policy;
  • health education; and
  • other health support services.

Choose your own path

With career outcomes ranging from acupuncturist to dietician to osteopath, this is a field well worth exploring. Courses range from certificates and diplomas of one to two years up to professional degrees of four years.

Vocational education and training (VET) institutions offer hands-on training for work in hospital or community settings, the paramedical services industry, and in occupational health and safety.

A university degree will qualify you for para-medical and allied health roles. You can expect that part of your course will be taught in a clinical setting. This will give you the practical skills you need to begin your career.

You will even find courses in complementary health specialisations, such as homoeopathy, naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicine—perfect if you are one of the growing number of students interested in these specialisations.

Most postgraduate students in health services and support choose coursework programs over research. Programs are usually designed for students who are already qualified health practitioners, but you may find come courses if you already have a background in fields like public policy or occupational health and safety.

Career options around the world

Check whether your proposed course of study is recognised by an Australian professional association. Most of these have reciprocal agreements with their overseas counterparts, so if you do your research it will not be difficult to find an Australian qualification that will be recognised in your home country.
