Most education courses are designed to qualify you as a school teacher. This could be through undergraduate study if you are undertaking your first degree; or through postgraduate study if you are a graduate of another discipline making a ‘career change’.
Undergraduate courses will usually prepare you to teach a particular age group or subject. They require four years of full time study, which will include ‘work experience’ in real classrooms that will give you a taste of what your life will be like as a teacher.
If you are interested in a postgraduate ‘career change’ course, you can expect to study one to two years full time, depending on your undergraduate degree and on the type of teaching you want to pursue. Graduate-entry bachelor degrees and graduate diplomas are the most common.
