What does it take to design and build an architectural masterpiece? Well, you will need plenty of inspiration and creativity, but first of all you will need a qualification.
Solid foundations for your future
As an architecture student, you will study everything from engineering and structural design, to building and project management, to graphics and design, and business.
If you would like to study even more widely, consider a double degree—you could combine architecture with landscape architecture, construction and even law.
You can expect to spend plenty of time in the design studio and on practical assignments outside the university. Like doctors and lawyers, architects need broad experience in their field before they can practise. You may find that your university will incorporate work experience into your course.
Most postgraduate courses are designed for professionals to upgrade their skills. But if, like many other professionals, you see architecture as a discipline as well as a practice, you can join the many research students who are broadening their knowledge through masters and doctorates in architecture, arts or design.
If you’d prefer to study at a vocational education and training (VET) institution, you will find plenty of para-professional or vocational courses available. You can find more information in the ‘built environment’ profile.
Professional recognition for a global career
In Australia, before you are registered as an architect, you will undertake a period of practical experience, before sitting for an exam. The requirements will differ slightly from country to country, but once you qualify in Australia, your degree should take you anywhere you want to go.
The APEC Architecture Register has made working overseas much easier. Qualified architects in Australia and other member countries can apply to practise in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taipei, Thailand and the US.
Architecture courses are some of the most exciting and enriching around, especially when you study them abroad.
