Australian University Rankings

Which university to choose? Australian University Rankings can help.

While Australia doesn't rank its universities the way some countries do, there are some compelling statistics that show just how great our colleges are compared to others around the world. In fact, many of the independent Australian university rankings we found ranked ours in their top 100.

According to the 2012-13 QS World University Rankings:

  • Seven Australian universities (out of 39) ranked in the top 100, and four ranked in the top 50
  • 64 per cent of Australia's universities ranked in the top 500

According to the Times Higher Education's 2012-13 World University Rankings:

  • Two Australian universities ranked in the top 50
  • Eight Australia universities ranked in the top 200

According to the 2012 ARWU Ranking of World Universities:

  • Five Australian universities ranked in the top 100
  • Seven Australia universities ranked in the top 200
  • 49 per cent of Australia's universities ranked in the top 500

What fields of research is Australia strong in?

  • 2010 Excellence in Research Australia National Report: 65 per cent of Australia's universities scored at or above world standard for programs assessed; Australia is especially strong in physical, biological, environmental and medical sciences and excels in many humanities and social science disciplines
  • 2012 National Taiwan University Rankings for Scientific Papers: ranks Australian universities in the top 100 worldwide by discipline as follows- seven in agriculture, six in social sciences, four in life sciences, four in engineering, three in medicine, and two in natural sciences
