YiPing, Malaysia

Institution: RMIT University

For Malaysian-born YiPing, studying in Australia is becoming a family tradition—both her parents are Australian alumni, and her brother will be joining her in Melbourne next year.

YiPing has just completed her foundation studies in architecture, design and planning. She studied English and various aspects of design, which were integrated with academic skills such as research, essay writing, critical thinking and oral presentation.

“It has prepared me very well for my first year in architecture. The exposure, guidance and teaching are already applied in my first week in university,” she says.

YiPing finds the Australian education system quite different to back home. “Here in Australia, we explore and find better understanding instead of just following blindly and keeping our thoughts within the box.”

YiPing says she found it easy to settle into living in Australia. “Melbourne is a very comfortable city. It is almost like home, especially because of the Asian restaurants and grocery stores.”

She adds: “Anyone who intends to come over to Melbourne shouldn’t feel too worried about feeling homesick or expect drastic culture shock.”
