Yuko
Japan
Institutions attended: Monash University English Language
Centre, RMIT
Now experienced in the communications field, Yuko gave her
career a great start when she decided to study a second language in Australia 15
years ago.
Yuko’s first degree in arts demanded a strong command of her
native language (Japanese), but her interests then turned to the English
language. Her language skills advanced to such a degree that she later undertook
further study in professional writing and editing.
She has found that
her Australian qualifications are highly regarded by employers, and believes her
studies helped her to find a job.
Even though her field is specialised
and can be sometimes difficult to enter, Yuko has this to say of her Australian
qualifications: “especially when you applied for work experience, it really
helped”.
In Yuko’s industry, as in many others, multilingual graduates
are always in demand. Whether she is working in Australia or on “English
publications in Japan”, she thinks her employers and the wider industry benefit
from hiring Australian-educated graduates.
She advises students thinking
of studying in Australia to consider their course options carefully, taking into
consideration their “career achievement and aim”, adding “Think about what you
can contribute to Australia as well as to your home country”.
