Becky, Taiwan

Institution attended: North Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT)

Working in a childcare centre gives Becky daily opportunities to apply the skills and values she learned at Victorian TAFE. Her employer and colleagues have also welcomed the chance to try out new Australian ideas.

“It is good to be different from others. Every field and industry requires new ideas, new concepts. Employers, of course, want to hire someone who has different ideas and is able to share them with co-workers and put them into practice,” she said.

The childcare worker, who is always searching out fun and new experiences, came to Australia for her studies after hearing good stories from friends.

“It was even better than I expected! I learned so much from the course, I spent less money than those who study in the United Kingdom or United States, I met many good friends and I enjoyed the wildlife,” she said. “The education I received was well-organised. It was very helpful and diverse. It was pretty demanding, however, school lecturers were very friendly and patient. They always took the time to listen to our issues and discussed with us how we could solve the problem.”

Becky understands that moving to a foreign country can be a bit scary but she reassures people that Australia is a friendly, sunny place which welcomes overseas visitors.

“Because Australia is such a culturally diverse country, it welcomes people bringing different skills and coming from different backgrounds.”

For prospective students, Becky has one piece of advice: “Just remember to keep yourself open to everything; you will be impressed with the beauty of Australia.”
