11 Food Hospitality and Personal Services
Are you interested in preparing, displaying and serving food and beverages? Or do you want to learn more about personal grooming such as hairdressing and beauty therapy? There are many study options in the field of food, hospitality and personal services.
This field covers:
- Hair cutting, styling and colouring techniques;
- Beauty care;
- Skin care and cosmetic products;
- Preparation, display and service of food and beverages; and
- Hygienic standards in the hospitality industry.
The areas of hospitality and hair and beauty therapy share many similarities. You will be required to work long and often irregular hours, particularly in the hospitality industry. Weekend work is the norm, as is shift work.
Another similarity is that both these fields have great courses available in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. Many students complete apprenticeships in hospitality while studying for qualifications that range from a certificate III to an advanced diploma.
It is also common for those working in careers in the personal services to have completed an apprenticeship in their chosen field. Apprenticeships are widely available in both hairdressing and beauty therapy. Many institutions across Australia also offer courses relating to the personal services industry, ranging from certificate to diploma level. Courses can be undertaken with most TAFE institutes, although there are a large number of private providers which offer relevant courses.
Perhaps you are considering opening your own hairdressing salon or restaurant. In this case you may consider completing studies in small business or commerce, either at VET level or at university.
