08 Management and Commerce

Are you interested in numbers and strategic plans? Would you like to work across public and private organisations and the government sector? Do you have good communication skills and attention to detail. If so, perhaps you should consider studying in the field of management and commerce.

This field is concerned with organising the human and material resources of organisations and institutions. You may be involved with the human side in management and administration, human resources or sales and marketing. In regards to the material resources side, you may become an accountant, a financial planner or a tourism operator.

There are many university options in this field, such as a bachelor of commerce or business. Postgraduate options range from graduate certificate to doctoral level, and cater for people wanting to specialise in a particular area or change careers.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) options in this field range from certificate to advanced diploma level, and some provide an alternative pathway into tertiary study.

Subfields within this field of study include:

  • Accounting;
  • Business and management;
  • Sales and marketing;
  • Tourism;
  • Office studies;
  • Banking, finance and related fields; and
  • Other management and commerce.

After studying in this field you will develop skills in decision-making, policy, organisation, financial planning and management, and the marketing and selling of goods and services.
