02 Information technology

It is hard to imagine, but 20 years ago it would have been difficult to find a course in information technology (IT). Now, you will find them in tertiary institutions across the country. As technology develops, the list of specialisations in the field keeps growing. Some traditional specialisations go from strength to strength, such as software development, computer systems and programming. Others, like desktop publishing and interactive multimedia, will test your creative flair. You can also try the growth fields of games technology and design.

In Australian universities, courses in applied science, information technology, computer science or informatics may all include relevant specialisations. Other relevant courses include elements of business or engineering, such as business information systems or computer engineering degrees.

You could also undertake a combined course, such as business and IT, to provide even more options for your career.

Diplomas and advanced diplomas at Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions often mirror university options like web design and development, programming, computer systems engineering and software development. VET is also many students’ first choice for cutting-edge fields like multimedia and e-security.

Nowadays, it is not only undergraduates who need to keep developing their skills. Most sectors of the IT industry demand regular skill upgrades and training, so a postgraduate degree will give you a great advantage as you enter this field of work.

Masters degrees in IT or information systems are just two options. Graduate certificates and diplomas also update and expand your professional skills. There are also postgraduate courses for graduates or professionals without a background in computing.

You should check that your course is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). The ACS has reciprocal arrangements with similar associations around the world, making it easier for you to have your skills recognised overseas.

However you approach it, Australian institutions can offer high-quality programs and qualifications recognised anywhere in the world.
