Victoria (VIC)
Victoria is situated in the south-east corner of mainland Australia and is the nation’s most densely populated state. Five million people live in Victoria, with 3.7 million residing in Melbourne, the State’s capital. Melbourne is a cosmopolitan city, world renowned for education, culture, art, sport, culinary excellence, finance and communications. In 2002 and 2004 it was voted “the world’s most livable city” and in a recent survey was named as one of only three cities with two “Top 20” universities for medical research, the others being Boston and London. Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo make up the other large metropolitan centres in the State and each of these cities has significant education facilities.
Victoria represents 25% of Australia’s economy, which includes financial services, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, information technology, energy and other highly-developed service industries. It is also a major transport hub with 40% of the country’s shipping traffic going through the Port of Melbourne. The diversity of Melbourne gives a strong base to its multi-lingual population and over 140 languages are spoken by its residents.
Victoria’s coastline extends over 1000 miles, bordering the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait and containing some of Australia’s most spectacular surf beaches. There is easy access to all types of outdoor activities and Melbourne is home to several of the world's most celebrated golf courses. Victoria's great recreational areas include snow country, with resorts providing excellent skiing and snowboarding, as well as famous wine regions. Historic towns like Ballarat, natural highlights such as the Grampian mountain range, Phillip Island (home of the fairy penguins) and of course the Great Ocean Road provide locals and visitors alike with diverse and magnificent landscapes and attractions.
Melbourne’s average summer temperatures range from 57°F – 78°F. Average winter temperatures range from 42°F – 56°F.
