Finding a program
There are limitless opportunities available for American students to study in Australia, including semester and year long exchanges and study abroad programs, short-term programs that run during the summer and winter months, as well as internships.
1. University Exchange: This option is for students attending a college or university in North America with an existing agreement with an Australian institution. Students need to contact the international department on their home campus to find out more about this option. Usually tuition fees are paid to the student’s home institution.
2. Program Enrollment: Many of the universities in Australia work with U.S. program providers. These program providers can assist in organizing enrollment, credit transfer and other activities. U.S. Program Providers
3. Direct Enrollment: This option allows students to enroll in the Australian institution without the benefit of their home institution or assistance from a U.S. program provider. Students will need to make all arrangements for credit transfer, accommodation and course enrollment with the Australian institution international office staff. Australian Universities
Admissions
Admission requirements vary from institution to institution. At most Australian universities, the minimum grade point average for study abroad programs range from 2.5 to 3.0. Entry into an undergraduate course requires an Australian Senior School Certificate of Education (Year 12) or the overseas equivalent. Students whose first language is not English must also meet an English language requirement. Applications generally close two months before the start of semester. Semester 1 applications generally close at the end of November and Semester 2 programs at the beginning of May.
It is recommended that a student seek advice from the institution about meeting their entry requirements before applying for admission into selected courses.
Tuition
International students are charged up-front tuition fees in Australia. These fees are very affordable and are often less expensive than those in the U.S. Some institutions make an additional charge to cover other student costs. These may include student organization membership, library and laboratory costs and sports facility costs. You may also have to pay a specific charge for excursions, books, stationery and other essential material for some courses. These costs will vary depending on the course or institution therefore average costs are provided below and should only be used as a guide. All school tuition fees are exempt from Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Institutions will advise on the payment of tuition fees.
