Macquarie University

Macquarie is set on 55 acres of hills and natural beauty in the town of North Ryde, 10 miles northwest of Sydney’s center. It combines the best of Australia’s open spaces with a modern campus that includes teaching and research facilities and extensive areas set aside for sports and leisure. It offers a wide range of academic programs and majors that span the humanities, sciences and social sciences.

Macquarie’s courses take full advantage of Sydney’s position in the Pacific Rim. At Macquarie, you can study the way writers from former colonial countries used English to create new kinds of fiction, examine how the arrival of Europeans affected Polynesian political culture or learn archaeological techniques while examining Aboriginal pre-history.

Orientation

A special session for study abroad students introduces them to their new life in Australia and includes information on housing, public transportation and travel, medical insurance, student life and activities in Sydney. Students are familiarized with facilities and services on campus, including the “meet a mate at Macquarie” program and the people who run them.

Student life

Activities  Students at Macquarie enjoy being in a cosmopolitan city near great natural resources. The Coordinator organizes cultural and social activities throughout the semester including a performance at the Opera House, 4-day visit to Melbourne and weekend events.

Housing and meals  Each AIFS student has a comfortable, furnished single room at Dunmore Lang, an affiliated residential college on campus. Student rooms have a private telephone with voice mail and personal computer outlets.

Dunmore Lang dining hall provides 20 meals per week. On weekends, many students travel or cook for themselves, so Saturday dinner is not provided.

Computers  Students have daily access to the Computer Center in the Macquarie Union building and in the Macquarie Library computer room, which has free Internet access. Students can also access the Internet from their dorm rooms (additional fees apply).

Insurance  Health coverage is mandatory for all international students in Australia. Included in the AIFS invoice, this is paid directly to the provider, OSHC Worldcare, by Macquarie.

Volunteering in the local community

The local community is not the only one who will benefit from your volunteer work. A volunteer experience can teach you about yourself, current issues, government services and the local community. Full details of the volunteer program will be given during orientation.
