A Taste of Australia
Missing your Australian meat pies, pavlova and chocolate bikkies?
Australian foods such as Tim Tams, Caramello Koalas, Cherry Ripes and Vegemite are available from a number of stores in North America. The World Market chain carries a number of Australian products including Tim Tams and Vegemite, and Pepperidge Farm now produces Tim Tams.
A full assortment of Australian food items can be ordered online from companies like Aussie Products, Simply Australian or the online Australian Catalogue. You can also order meat pies, sausage rolls and grocery items from the Australian Bakery Cafe. Although they are based in Georgia, they ship throughout North America.
- The Eight Mile Creek, in New York City is supposedly the first Australian restaurant in America. It has modern Aussie cooking upstairs with menu items like emu carpaccio, grilled kangaroo fillet with roasted rosemary mash and crisp-baked barramundi fillet. Downstairs has a pub feel, offering Australian beers and wines by the glass, with bistro food available too, featuring meat pies, ‘Coopers Ale’-battered fish & chips, kangaroo skewers and "wallaby wings."
- The Rugby Café in Washington, DC, located in Georgetown at 1065 Wisconsin Ave NW (between Grace St. NW and M St. NW), serves up Australian beer, wine, burgers and pies. Be sure to check out their Aussie burger!
