NSW International Student of the Year

TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute graduate, Berias Masseque, has been named the 2012 NSW International Student of the Year in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) category.

Mr Masseque, a composer, performer and producer from Mozambique, is a graduate of the Advanced Diploma of Sound Production at Newcastle College. Highly commended for his involvement with community events, he is a member of the Hunter African Community Council where he promotes education to refugees and mentors young Africans.

"I am so proud of winning this award. Music is such an important part of my life and working with people with mental illness is so important. I love living in Australia and believe that if I can make a change in my local community, I can make a change in my state and in this country. And if we can make these positive changes, we can influence the world,"  he said.

Jack Wai-Him Yip from Macquarie University was the Higher Education International Student of the Year winner and Jiaqi Zhao from Stella Maris College won the School section.

The International Student Awards recognise and celebrate international students and the contribution they make within the community.
