Definition

Scholarships are awards carrying financial advantage in undertaking a specified program or course of study. The advantage is usually in the form of a full or partial payment of fees, or meeting of costs associated with the program or course of study such as living costs, purchases of books or accommodation.
School

School

Definition

School has several meanings. Firstly, it is where students undertake pre-tertiary study. It can also be used to describe an administrative grouping of students and staff dedicated to one field of study in a tertiary institution. For example, the School of Medicine is part of the Faculty of Science. See also Faculty and College.
Semester

Definition

A Semester is an academic teaching period, usually of about 17 weeks in duration. For example, it may involve 12 teaching weeks, 2 tuition free weeks, one study week and 2 weeks of exams. An academic year is divided into two semesters.

A seminar is similar to a tutorial, but usually with a bigger group of students. Seminars are common in postgraduate courses.

Special Consideration

Special Consideration

Definition

If you are ill, or have an issue beyond your control that prevents you studying or performing as well as you should have on assessment tasks, you may be able to apply for special consideration. Check with your institution.

State governments are the second tier of the Australian government system. There are seven state and territory governments; Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.

Tertiary Institutions are able to charge a compulsory fee for the provision of non-academic Services and Amenities. Institutions will often explain on their website how the funds collected are distributed. See also Student Union and Clubs and Societies.

All institutions will have some support services dedicated to students. They may be counsellors, support staff or teachers. They will be able to refer you to services or other assistance if they cannot provide the service you require.

Most universities and some TAFEs have a student union, which is a membership based organisation, with students as its members. The leadership is usually democratically elected by the student body, and the organisation provides social activities, representation and academic support to the membership. The services provided by Student Unions are often subsidised through the Student Services and Amenities Fee. See also Clubs and Societies.

An academic session held during the summer, primarily for supplementary and remedial study. Also known as summer semester.
Superannuation

Superannuation is a payment made on your behalf by your employer to a fund that is dedicated to supporting you in retirement. If you choose to work part-time while you are studying in Australia, your employer will be required to contribute to a superannuation fund on your behalf. In secondary and tertiary education, Swot Vac is a period of non-teaching prior to examinations. It is a private study period before exams. You have no scheduled classes during this period. It is designed to enable you to revise and study for your exams.
