Australia’s banking system is regulated by the Federal Government. You will probably need to set up an Australian Bank Account when you arrive in Australia. There are specific identification requirements for establishing a bank account in Australia, check with your preferred bank or credit union.

Barrack

In Australia, to cheer for or support a sporting team is to barrack. For example, someone may ask you “who do you barrack for?”

When buying a glass of beer in a bar or pub in Australia, the size of the glass will depend on where you are. In Victoria and Queensland a standard glass is a pot (285ml) but in WA the same size glass is called a middy. In NSW the standard is a schooner (425ml), and pints (575ml) are now available in most areas. Please note however, that you are only allowed to buy alcohol in Australia if you are over 18 years of age.

Most rental properties in Australia will require you to submit a Bond (often the equivalent of four weeks rent) to pay for any breaches of the tenancy agreement. It is sometimes known as a security deposit. Depending on your rental arrangement, the Bond may be lodged with a statutory authority. These authorities are State Government bodies.

BYO means Bring Your Own. It is a commonly used term in Australia when you are asked to bring your own drinks, food or other items to a social function or restaurant.
